Gapped teeth, also known as diastema, can occur between any of the upper or lower teeth.
It most commonly appears between the two front teeth.
While gapped teeth are often fixed at a young age through traditional wire braces or other methods, many adults who have not received treatment grow to become insecure of their smiles.
What causes gapped teeth?
Gaps between teeth occur as a result of a mismatch between the sizes of the jaw bones, causing teeth to grow in various sizes.
If teeth are too small for the jaw bone, a space can develop. In some cases, teeth may be missing or undersized.
This most commonly occurs with the upper lateral incisors – the two teeth beside the upper front teeth.
During the period in which there is a space between the teeth, a permanent gap can develop.
Certain habits can also cause gaps between teeth.
As is the case with an underbite or overbite, thumb sucking can pull teeth forward, creating spaces.
Pressure created by frequently pressing the tongue against the front teeth can also result in gaps.
Can gapped teeth cause oral health issues?
Most people feel insecure about the appearance of gapped teeth, but in some cases, diastema can cause more severe oral health issues.
These dental issues can cause an immense amount of discomfort and even result in tooth loss.
How can gapped teeth be fixed?
As mentioned previously, gapped teeth are traditionally fixed in patients of a young age through traditional wire braces.
However, many older patients find the idea of visible wire braces daunting.
That’s why we offer the Invisalign treatment. This non-invasive, invisible plastic brace is moulded specifically to your needs for optimal comfort and effectiveness.
Invisalign’s removability is one of its greatest benefits, as patients can take out the braces to eat or brush their teeth, causing minimal disruption.
