Most people develop some form of teeth alignment issues as they grow older.

Deep bite is a malocclusion (misalignment) in which the upper front teeth overlap the bottom front teeth when the back teeth are closed.

It is very similar to an overbite. While a deep bite may not be particularly noticeable from an aesthetic point of view, patients may find that the condition causes other oral health issues.

What causes a deep bite?

Unlike other dental conditions such as an underbite or open bite, a deep bite is most commonly caused by a smaller lower jaw.

When the low jaw develops in a way that is shorter than the upper jaw, the upper teeth sit further forward and the lower teeth grow towards the back of the upper teeth.

This can cause serious misalignment problems. In some cases, people with a strong bite, or who frequently clench their jaw, may also find that they develop a deep bite.

What issues are caused by a deep bite?

While a deep bite is not necessarily noticeable aesthetically, it can cause a wealth of hidden dental issues.

Lower teeth may wear down quickly due to a person clenching or grinding their lower teeth against the upper teeth.

If a person bites into the roof of their mouth, ulcers may develop, which can be sore and uncomfortable and may even affect the way they eat.

What can be done to fix a deep bite?

As a deep bite is frequently connected to the overcrowding of teeth and the development of crooked teeth; your dentist may need to create space between the teeth to allow room for realignment in some cases.

However, we also offer the Invisalign method. This non-invasive treatment method uses clear, custom-designed braces that sit over the teeth, without the need for uncomfortable traditional wire braces.

Invisalign works by targeting what is known as the ‘Curve of Spee’, this is the curvature of the teeth from the front to the back, which develops as a result of a deep bite.

To reduce the contact between the upper and lower teeth, your dentist will create precision bite ramps, customised for you, to give the best chance of realigning your teeth.

Why should I choose Invisalign to treat my deep bite?

Invisalign is a non-invasive, simple and virtually invisible treatment method.

Many of our patients choose Invisalign because it is not noticeable, unlike wire braces, and can be removed for eating or brushing the teeth.

Invisalign braces are comfortable and will not cause any irritability while remaining a highly-effective and proven treatment option.
